We were contacted in the first instance by Jeanette & Matthew, they had acquired their Mark Wilkinson kitchen via a house move. They had a good look at our website & reviews then decided to get in touch for a quote to look at transforming their kitchen. They kindly sent me photos so I was able to quote it all up. The good thing with having painted so many kitchens, we can accurately price up from photos or drawings.
After a short while I was invited round to look at the kitchen and the job was booked in. This also allows the customer to see a couple of painted door samples that we carry round with us. We talk about the process, the paints that we use and discuss the colours. In this case Jeanette knew what she was having, Cornforth White on the outer units & Hauge Blue on the island. Having used this colour scheme before we knew it worked well and would look terrific.
Painting a Mark Wilkinson kitchen
On the first day we will start by numbering all the doors & drawers. As well as noting which if any are sticking, before removing them all. These are then taken back to the workshop to free up space in the customer’s kitchen. The worktops are covered up as well as the floor. Once all this is completed we can fully clean and degrease all the surfaces using our preferred cleaning product. Once it is all cleaned it is then thoroughly rinsed, before allowing to dry. After this any knocks or dints are filled up before a light sand down just enough for a key. Only then can we apply the 1st coat of high adhesion primer. This paint is tinted to the topcoat colour ensuring great coverage. With the primer on and dry, we can start top coating. We apply no less than two topcoats, sometimes three with darker colours. Whilst all the frame is getting painted on site, the doors are getting the same treatment in the workshop. In addition, we refurbished the chopping block, we also had a beech wooden cupboard corner shelf made to match. Only on the last day we fit all the kitchen back together.
We will use the same paint as Mark Wilkinson, so durability is assured as well as longevity & it looks like it has just come out of the showroom again.

High quality change
I liked Jason from the moment he came to look over the job. No nonsense, totally reliable and professional. The kitchen is now a nice place to spend time in. We also upgraded worktops and appliances. Before we had quotes of around £60k. I have got the look I wanted at a fraction of the cost of a hand painted new kitchen. (think Martin Moore, Tom Howley style). He is also a lovely guy who we enjoyed having in our house.
Normally I can’t wait to be rid of tradesmen! They are often not befitting of the name, but it was a totally enjoyable project. I cannot recommend highly enough.
What amount do you charge to hand paint a kitchen
We price all hand painted kitchens on a individual basis, however it works out around £100 per door. A little wooden kitchen that is lacquered oak or pine will more often than not cost about £1500 to prime and paint. The bigger kitchens have a tendency to be around £8000 plus. Louise wanted to change the look of her kitchen from a cream colour to something totally new. She had seen a wallpaper that didn’t go that well with the cream units. Louise kindly sent photos of her kitchen so I was able to price it up accurately from them . I was invited round to talk further about the refurbishment. We talked about changing the tiles behind the range to a pale grey and maybe painting the island. We also looked at possible colours for the kitchen units that would look good. Once Louise had seen our painted sample board we were booked to do the work.
The kitchen had been factory sprayed originally, the island had been spray lacquered. This does not cause a problem as the primers we use are manufactured to stick to any surface providing the prep has been done thoroughly. We arrived on site to start and the colours were confirmed to us, Dimpse on the main units & Inchyra blue on the island. this colour combination was going to look fab. The first thing we do is remove all the doors & drawers, kick boards and note where everything goes. This is a must for when we put it all back together. Now we can get on with the cleaning and all the prep needed to ensure our paint system sticks solid. As the frame is being done we are also doing the rest of the kitchen in the workshop. Over the next 10 days we clean, prep, and paint with the grip adhesive primers and hard wearing waterborne enamel paints. Only on the last day does it all come together with us refitting everything we removed in the first place.
