I studied graining and marbling under Bill Holgate. I have since mastered many decorative paint finishes, which I have used to good effect. Adding a touch of class to kitchens, furniture and interior architectural features throughout Lancashire and nationwide.

Decorative paint finishes
I have marbled many fixtures and fittings over the years. Starting from a super smooth eggshell painted base coat, I apply a variety of tinted scumbles and glazes, and using traditional tools and sundry items. I imitate the fissures and colouring in natural stone, such as Carrara marble, verdigris and granite. They really do look like stone after they have been protected with a clear varnish or glaze.

My most challenging task I had was to turn this MDF church altar into a solid massive stone structure.

You will see further examples in the gallery where I have transformed many items. Items including furniture, columns, even walls with marbled and stone effect finishes. decorative paint finishes decorative paint finishes

Decorative paint finishesApplying an oak grain effect over a pine door was a traditional way for painters to “upgrade” a property.

I was commissioned by the National Trust to refurbish the grained front door to the Beatrix Potter museum.

It was a double honour for me as it had been grained previously by Bill Holgate, my tutor, some 30 years earlier. decorative paint finishes decorative paint finishes

Classes on how to do decorative paint finishes

Every month I write articles for the Lancashire Magazine. I have explained the processes to marble and grain and faux finish small items of furniture and jewellery boxes. Some of the Lancashire magazine decorating tips and articles have been expanded on here.

If you have an artistic streak, I strongly recommend you try faux finishing yourself. You may be surprised at just how effective the results can be. One word of advice though. – the base coat has to be just right. I prepare bases for marbling and graining to the same standard as I would hand paint kitchen doors. decorative paint finishes
