The Vision:
The client’s vision was a bright, airy space with a touch of drama. They wanted to maintain the kitchen’s classic feel while injecting a sense of modern sophistication. All White, a crisp and clean shade, was chosen for the majority of the cabinetry to maximise light and create a sense of spaciousness. Jack Black, a bold and impactful colour, was selected for the island and select accent pieces to add depth and visual interest.
The Process of Transforming a Tom Howley Kitchen in Macclesfield:
Our team at JS Decor meticulously prepared the surfaces before applying the new colours. This involved thorough cleaning, sanding, and priming to ensure a smooth and long-lasting finish. Breathing New Life into a Tom Howley Chopping Block:
There’s something deeply satisfying about restoring a piece of well-loved kitchen equipment. Recently, I tackled the revitalization of a beautiful, but well-worn, Howley chopping block. Years of chopping, slicing, and dicing had left it looking a little tired, but I knew beneath the surface lay the potential for its original beauty to shine through.
The process was simple, yet rewarding: sanding and oiling.
First, the Sanding:
We started with a coarse grit sandpaper to remove the deepest scratches and stains. We gradually moved to finer grits, smoothing out the surface until it felt like silk. This part takes patience, but the transformation is visible with each pass.
Then, the Oiling:
Once the surface was smooth and clean, it was time to rehydrate the wood. We used a food-safe mineral oil, applying it generously with a clean cloth. The dry wood soaked it up like a sponge. I let the oil penetrate for a few hours, then wiped away any excess. We repeated this process a 5/6 times, allowing the wood to fully absorb the oil between applications.
The Result?
The difference was remarkable. The once dull and scratched surface was now a rich, warm tone, with the natural grain of the wood beautifully highlighted. The chopping block felt smooth and supple, ready for many more years of culinary adventures.
