Hand Painted Mahogany Bedroom Furniture In Formby

Here I explain the process for preparation through to completion of some hand painted mahogany bedroom furniture in Formby. There was an added twist to this job for me.

I was contacted towards the end of last year about painting some bedroom furniture.

Andy Crichton of Traditional painter had already painted the client’s Poggenpohl kitchen in 2011.

I must admit to being a little nervous, painting on one of Andy’s jobs, but when we turned up on the first day we were taken on a tour of their kitchen, I was happy that we could equally match his finish, if not improve on it.

(Andy told me that if truth be told, he was as nervous as me about my assessment of his work!)

To work

The client had given me the colours, which were mixed up by Holman’s, who have thousands in their database. We set to work preparing the bedroom furniture. Having only seen the furniture through email, we saw the Ebony inlay for the first time!

We cleaned the furniture the same way we always do, neat degreaser  and wet flatting using a scratch pad at the same time.

Once rinsed with clean water we allowed them to dry.

The primer was prepared and thinned accordingly, then applied by by synthetic brushes & superflock roller sleeves.

We primed all the furniture in the same day, so it had all night to dry fully.

The following day it only needed the lightest of de-nibs, to achieve a truly flat surface, before dusting off then tacking down.

Topcoats

We opted for three coats of Furniture Feelings, because this is waterborne it dries quicker. It is dry in about 30 mins which is fast enough so not to pick up airborne bits, also it does not smell.

The Feelings was applied the same way as the primer. I do favour the super flock foam sleeves – a purely personal reason being it seems to move this particular paint about better.

Once the paintwork was finished it was time to be passed by the client. Would it stand up to scrutiny, and meet the standard that the client has come to expect…

Thankfully the client loved it and they have already booked us to do some more work at their home.

All in all it was a fab job, changing fairly drab timber furniture into a more modern and lighter looking feature.
